Happy Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is time to celebrate your mom, grandmother, aunts, sisters, friends or anyone that has been in your life that has children. For many this can be a day of remembering our loss loved ones. In my eyes being a mother is not easy.. a mother wears many hats, uptakes many roles and ultimately keeps the daily, yearly and future rolling!

IMG_1523IMG_4746

Today I want to recognize my twin, my rock, my warm peach, my mom. Teresa Lynn (Salone) Shakoor was born on August 12, 1954 in San Diego California, to Robert and Doris Salone. She is the youngest of 3 and loves to sing, dance, care for others and can cook a mean peach and sweet potato pie! After graduating Lincoln High school.. yes where the black panthers marched to protect their fellow brethern! She went on to San Diego City college and received a certificate in administration from Kellsy Jenny College. Not many years after she married William Perry Thornton aka Rashad Shakoor. Yep that’s how I became Tupacs cousin! My mom joined forces with my father by opening Shure-Core cutting company, which was the first black owned construction company in San Diego. Looking back today a lot of the bridges, bypasses and other foundational structures in San Diego where built by my dad and administered by my mom. Pretty cool I’ll say!

The construction company was not the only company in the shakoor family, as I said before my mom can cook a mean meal! Well soon Teresa’s fine foods was born. By this time my mom had for kids me being the youngest.. and her only side kick was our momma Doris ( her mom). She managed to raise 4 kids, be a devoted wife, and run a full time business. Although the food train came to an end it didn’t stop her famous potato salad from becoming world famous.. When I say world famous I mean famous in the African American community. My mom catered her potato salad to the military making sometimes over 60 pounds of potato salad. her potato salad was such a hit that she was personally asked to cater a luncheon for the Shabazz family! Yes the one and only Malcolm X family.

IMG_1517IMG_4743

my mom landed a job with the San Diego Union Tribune where she work, the classified ads, and then managed the obituary column. Being a key role to a huge newspaper didn’t slow down my mom at home nor her fashion! Did you think I would forget. You all know how much I love my om and her style, it’s where I gain inspiration. My mom was a hot stepper at work and even at home! I always remember shopping with my mom at Robinsons May which is now Macy’s and many other department stores. From her hair to her shoes she never missed a beat.

Let’s fast forward, after my parents divorce, my mom moved 3 of her 4 kids to Virginia where I and my sister completed our bachelors degree from Norfolk State University, only following in our brother and other older sister’s footsteps. Our educational train didn’t stop there as we all today have our master’s degree in various fields.

Through many hardships that my mom faced she never gave up on her determination to be a good mother to her children, to motivate to get all of us through college, and to trust in God. One thing she wanted for all of us was to be better than her and to get an education. We all did just that! We owe that strength, long hours of studying and student loan debt to her 🙂 (but that’s good debt I’ll say) Today my mom still hasn’t missed a beat, as she recently retired from being a medical assistant from Sentera Hospital and is planning on traveling and of course spending time with her grandchildren. (not mine yet!)

IMG_1521IMG_4739

I owe so much to this strong, beautiful, godly women, words honestly can’t explain. This is only a snippet into what I can write about my warm peach. I know if you have ever met here she has truly warm your heart and soul. She is truly my twin that I can’t help be more than alike. Today is to you mom, love you

I figured recreating some of my moms steller looks would be an awesome blog for today. I remember looking at these pictures year after year, saying to myself I am going to look like that when I get older, or I can’t wait to dress so nice…(as if she didn’t already dress me well). Tell me your fondest memories of your mom or any special women in your life.

But yes it’s been a while since I brought you a grown and sexy look and I thought this dress was perfect! Form the Eva Longoria line, this body-con stretchy form fitting strip dress is amazing! it hugs all the right curves and the pattern makes the perfect statement. Look at the front pattern compared to the back, it’s that awesome!

Pairing this one of a kind dress with  pops of yellow did the trick. Wearing my favorite yellow pumps from JustFab along with my yellow bag from Charming Charlie tops off this outfit..

Flats or Heels? Spring Accessories

IMG_4442IMG_4451IMG_4448IMG_4447IMG_4452IMG_4450

Divas I have been asked so many times if I prefer heels or flats. Honestly I prefer comfort. I secretly have feet problem and hate to be in pain.. Don’t get me wrong I have a plethora of heels but when it comes to looking good I make sure I have extra cushioning, a block heel or flats. Although I love to get into my stellitoes I make sure I have a change of shoes to still be fashionable!

In today’s look I am giving you 1 outfit with 2 different pairs of shoes, same color and style just different heel heights. This outfit is super chill, comfortable and oh so cute! Kimonos are a spring and summer must have. As these can make any simple outfit look chic. I love long kimonos over a pair of jeans, jumpsuits or crop pants. I opted for this simple red orange blouse. Both of these tops are form Ross and snagged both for only $8.99! wow what a bargain.

I am new but old to this rip jean trend, as my mom had bought me a pair when I was a teenager and I was afraid of looking 18 again.. Which is not a bad thing but I am forever being told I look under age.. Yes I still get carded till this day. Anyways these jeans are form New York and Company and they are actually on sale. They are great jean material and offer a nice stretch to them. I love the distressing on these as off an edgy look tho this outfit.

Now for my accessories, This simple cream purse is from H&M snagged this last year for only $4.99 on clearance. I chose these fuchsia heels with fringe to elevate this look. However if you are more into comfort you can have the same look  with the sandal version. I found both of these from JustFab last season. JustFab has been great with offering a shoe is different styles. Below I have similar products to achieve this look.

How do you pair your accessories with your outfits?

Maxi Dress Tips

IMG_4337IMG_4338IMG_4356IMG_4353

Maxi dresses have evolved into a spring and summer must have for me. Honestly long maxi dresses growing up were not the hottest trend for a teenager let alone for any young girl trying to figure out her fashion sense. Maxi dresses can go grandma real quick.. or even too sexy depending on your body type. Here are a few helpful tips for picking a maxi dress.

  1. Maxi: Equals long in length, but does not mean big in width. Be mindful if you are short like me some maxi dresses will tend to hang on me and make me look even skinnier. Try the high low or the asymmetrical maxi dresses this will give he look as if you are taller instead of shorter. If you are bigger than me do not buy a larger size or try to cover up your shape. this will only make you look larger or like you are wearing grandmas moo-moo! Flaunt what you have gracefully.
  2. Prints: if someone who is a size 0 with a printed maxi dress on the odds of it looking the same on someone who is considered plus size, it will not look the same. Prints play an illusion that you are bigger or smaller. If you are considered plus size try smaller prints and if considered petite try a larger print. let me know how that works?
  3. Shape: Weather you are big or small we all have to create that illusion that we have this banging shape. Even if you have a small waist you tend to accentuate this area. Try purchasing dresses with a waist tie to pull in your waist. this will create that hour glass affect.

Maxi Dresses are a must have and should be a staple for spring and summer. They are easy, light and many wearing often wear them to weddings and date nights. you can always dress them up or down depending on the material and style! Don’t forget maxi dresses can be worn with heels, tennis shoes or sandals.. take your pick.

For this look it’s a simple wrap maxi dress. The wrap helps to pull in my waist and make my bust look bigger. I went with a soft bold print. Because this dress is long i choose to pair it with heels. This give the illusion that i am taller, like I am going to rip the runway. How would you style this dress?

This dress is no long available, but I have you covered click here for several options!

How to Achieve 2 Looks 1 Outfit

Do you remember making fresh lemonade and setting up shop on the corner street? Ok I didn’t! However I remember picking lemons in my granny’s backyard. The only thing abut my granny’s lemons is that they were sweet. How do lemons become sweet? Well the neighboring orange tree crossbreed with the lemon tree making an lemorange or an orangemon. Whichever way you these lemons made the best lemonade. You could eat them raw and not once have to pucker your face.

This outfit giving me summer breeze on grandmas porch drinking that good ole sweet lemonade. This 2 piece outfit is from SteinMart, it is very vesatile as it comes with high waisted pants that are lined. So no peek a boos. The top can be cropped or you can pull it down to meet the pants at your waist. It’s off the shoulder with straps. This shirt is a plus because it’s bra friendly.

The red option is if you are feeling bold. I felt that this already vibrant outfit needed a contrasting color so why not red? I added this red floppy hat that is old from Walmart, my JustFab tie up heels and a red Kenneth Cole tote bag.

IMG_4366IMG_4367IMG_4368

For the white an denim option. Now this was easy and safe. Since denim goes with just about anything, this was a no brainier to pair these basket weaved denim heels with this outfit. Toss on some darling cat eye shades and there you have it.

Fashion Is My Voice

IMG_4218IMG_4214IMG_4216IMG_4215IMG_4217

Have you ever felt lost in a crowd..not noticeable almost like you are invisible? I have found that many people feel this way, I know I have. Finding your voice is one of many factors to self love.

My twin aka my mom often would say never loose your voice. Coming from a broken family household I often saw my mother’s voice being limited. I didn’t understand her words then, but I often found myself trying to fit in with the latest fashion…that never looked good on me. It wasn’t until I was in undergrad at Norfolk State University when I realized, I can’t run to the store and just buy anything.. There’s an actual science, remedy a method to this. Once I developed my own style, this is when my voice developed.

Since then my style has changed and has become more fashionable but it relates to who I am creatively. To me fashion is art! Your voice is not just the words that you speak but by the way you creatively express yourself. Once I found my voice, I feel alive, bold and I love myself just that much more.

High Fashion & a Bentley Continental GT

IMG_4205IMG_4190

IMG_3900IMG_3897

Growing up in the inner city of San Diego California, I was not exposed to all of the many arts, high society clubs, luxury cars and many other things. I wouldn’t say I was raised in the ghetto. However my parents did the best they could. Well we did have the biggest house on the block and many people thought we were rich. Rich in money? No! But rich in style yes.. Both of my parents new how to dress and instilled that in my brothers and sisters. My mother would always tell me “Always dress to impress, you never know who you will met.” I intend to always dress my best.

Flashing into present day my husband was raised the same way however was exposed to luxury in many different ways. However we have the same mindset although we come form different locations and background! It amazing how you can meet someone who is just like you! My husband is an Aerospace Engineer, who loves all things, trains, plane and automobiles. He is a natural for tech gadgets and things that go fast. Totally opposite of me.

We were recently invited to the Bentley Reveal party of the all new Bentley Continental GT (Grand Touring). Let me give this car a moment of silence… Okay so when you think of Bentley you think of high class, fancy, red carpet right? Well I at least do and so does my husband. We didn’t know who we would meet let alone network with.. I of course dressed us both and figured, lace, and suede always look rich.

My outfit is from Dillards. this is one of the dresses i purchased during the New Year’s sale. I snag this beauty for more than a bargain! Te detailing on this dress is exquisite as it actually fades to different shade of burgundy. There’s a nice lining underneath that stops right at the knee leaving the rest of the lace see-thru. I paired this lace Antonio Melani dress with my burgundy suede JustFab heels. My husband was fitted in a matching burgundy blazer and black lapel.. fitted black slack pants and “custom” made shoes.. okay they are not custom made but the way they match this blazer one would think so.

For any car lovers out there check out the full Bentley Continental GT technical review form my husband Ben Wayne . Enjoy!

How has your past shaped your present? Are you more than grateful for thing your parents taught you even if you had access to luxury things in life? I am more than appreciative for what I did, didn’t and now have.

My Fair Lady – Audrey Hepburn Inspired

IMG_4228IMG_4227IMG_4225IMG_4220IMG_4219IMG_4222IMG_4226

Doesn’t spring make you think of bright colors, hats and the races? Well I have actually never been to the races.. which is crazy because I grew up in California and the Del Mar Race track is right there.. maybe I can venture to the races soon with my hubster! that would be fun.

This outfit is giving me Audrey Hepburn “My Fair Lady” when she wore the big hat at the races 🙂 I love Audrey and her classic style. Of course New York and Company got me right on this look. I am in love with these paper bag waist tapered pants. Bright daffodil yellow is such a great color as it’s bold but sexy I paired these pants with a statement black and white blouse. The cute details on this blouse are amazing form it’s bell pleated sleeves to the bow tie back closure. I decided to wear my studded black strapped heels with these just to elevate the look.. And why not add a matching stripe hat to top off the look.

How would you wear this look?

Friday Vibes with Stripes

IMG_4044IMG_4038IMG_4047IMG_4040IMG_4007IMG_4046IMG_4041

Friday Vibes.. You have no idea how happy I am that it’s Friday! Ant this all stripe and pop of silver outfit is setting my fashion sense free. Matching sets have been in trend for the past 2 years. I think it’s funny that people find this trend to be knew.. it’s not it’s just been revamped from the 70’s and 80’s.

This entire outfit is from… can you guess??? NY & Company.. I can’t help but to shop there they always get me right! This outfit is no long online but can be found in stores. I love the ankle pants that NY & Company  has to offer. As the cut and fit are just right.. They also have a good amount of stretch. The top is made out of a chiffon material with a cotton underlay! perfect for those spring and summer days!

I paired this look with my silver JustFab oxfords.. just to give this look some added flare.

What are your Friday plans?

On this rainy day I thought it would be great to post this spring transitional inspired outfit. I’m over here struggling as we have had some beautiful spring days within the past few days.. and now it’s back to cold and raining. yuck! Come through Spring come through.

This is such a simple outfit for those on the go days. I took my simple all white zip Express blouse, topped it with a simple soft pink sweater kimono from Dress up. I had to jazz up this outfit with my distressed paint splattered jeans from NY & CO. I absolutely love these jeans, very fun and playful for spring and summer. I decided to stick with the soft pink for my shoes as these JustFab open toed lace up’s did the trick.

What’s on your outfit agenda this week?
