When Medicine Meets Racism

Since we are in the mist of a pandemic and a race war I think it’s only necessary if I start highlighting some of my friends and family and if any of you would like to share a story let me know! This story is about my father in law. Dr. Benjamin Laremont. How odd is that medicine met racism and discrimination way back when. Did you think this was possible?

img_2457

Let’s rewind Dr. Ben was born and raised Panama City, Panama and was 3 of 12 siblings. As a young boy he always had this desire to help people. Mainly because his family and local residents were to poor to afford healthcare. Simple illnesses that we take for granted, that are easily treated often his hit family by storm. After graduating high school, Dr. Ben was awarded a scholarship (Institute of International Education) (IIE) and attended Sterling College in Kansas. After graduating  with his Bachelors of Science, Dr. Ben went on to receive his doctor of medicine degree at Maharry Medical School. Following his graduation he attended the University of Illinois School of Medicince where he did his residency and became specialized in Family Medicine.  Soon after is when he joined and served the U.S Navy for 2 years and received his U.S citizenship.

img_2459

During his residency he labored to diagnose and treat and elderly white gentlemen and when he became conscious the patient was shocked and to his disbelief that a black doctor had treated him.Later on that evening, as usual Dr. Ben and the other doctors madetheir rounds in teh hospital. The elederly gentlemen was very shook up and had the opportunity to speak to the head of the doctor. The patients response was “I saw a N***er in my dreams.” The head of the department replied “oh you mean Dr. Laremont.”

img_2456

In passing Dr. Laremont tried not to make much of it but his thoguhts said ” when you look around and see 6 to 8 people and one of them is black, and that’s you, you don’t need to say or do anything as all eyes are always watching your actions. You can make an issue out of it, however you  stand to have more to lose, solely because you are always singled out.” Dr. Benjamin Laremont

img_2460

Dr. Benjamin Laremont still practices today loving taking care of his patients. He has been married to his devoted wife Dr. Sylvia Laremont and they blissfully have 4 children.

In the middle of a life or death situation racism still prevailed within this mans heart. SO let’s fast forward to today. Answer me this has things changed? I think not as today we are in the middle of a pandemic and a race war. We are still on two sides of the fence fighting for equality. It doesn’t matter how much education, status, white coat, your title you are still black. Still not good enough to save a life or to have equal rights. These past couple of months have been exhausting for the black community but I truly believe we will gain traction this time. I say to everyone who is fighting for equality don’t give up. One day.. one day in the name of Jesus things will be equal.

image00024

A few weeks ago it was a normal shoot day for Daniesha and I, when we stumbled upon this sign.  I immediately knew that I had to tell this story about my father in law. This sign speaks volumes of how how far we have not come. These past couple of months (which is equivalent to centuries) have been exhausting for the black community. I truly believe we will gain traction this time and start to see something change. I say to everyone who is fighting for equality don’t give up. One day.. one day in the name of Jesus things will be equal.

How To Style – Basic Essential Edition

Hey divas, do you remember last week when I took an old outfit and showed you how to wear it 3 ways. Well, I’ve done it again except this time this is staples that you should have in your wardrobe. No need to buy anything just take a dive into your closet and make several outfits out of 1. I am beginning to like these blogs 1 outfit styled in different ways.

image00025

Items You will need

Please keep in mind what’s in your wardrobe of course will differ from what’s in mine. Don’t be afraid to live on the edge a bit by switching up the colors or using a vest instead of a dress.

  • Pants – skinny, cropped, wide-leg any of these will work
  • Basic tank top – any color of your choice that matches your outfit. No lie I need help with getting more basic any my closet, anyone wants to help me 🙂 I tend to buy prints or non-basics. Ughhh  I know I will do better.
  • Shirt dress – you can easily switch this up with a long sleeveless vest that button
  • Shorts
  • Shoes – I chose sneakers and heels. However you can use flats, or a low heel depends on your style.

image00011

Outfit 1: Casual Chic

This outfit can take you through spring, fall, and even winter. Simply throw on a turtleneck or a sweater underneath and bam! However, since we are rolling in hot summer weather, we are keeping in jazzy with this olive green and cream zebra print Antonion Melani shirt dress. The dress offers buttons and a belt. I switched out the original belt tot his textured raffia belt to add character. I paired this dress with a pair of skinny Michael Kors jeans and some high top sneakers and a purse from JustFab. I added some cool tropical bird earrings from Kisha Rose Treasures and a pair of shades. This gave me the cool-casual effortless look. I am ready to hit the streets.

image00004

[show_shopthepost_widget id=”4097319″]

Outfit 2: lunch with the girls

Now, remove those pants, unbutton the dress, slip on a tank. I choose this gold knit tank from NY & Company from the Eva Mendes Collection. This added a bit of color but also matched with my heels and bag. I slipped on these high waisted white shorts to give a flirty and fun look to the outfit. For my accessories, I chose these heels that matched with this look, a straw bag, and of course a cool pair of shades.

image00037

[show_shopthepost_widget id=”4097321″]

Outfit 3: Date Night

Date Night with my Mr. calls for legs out and heels. Button up that shirt dress belt it and put on those heels. This look is perfect for a summer date night over a light salad and a fruity drink. Well, that’s just me. This look called for no extra pieces, simply remove the shorts and tank and you are ready to go!

image00021

[show_shopthepost_widget id=”4097322″]

You can simply do this with multiple pieces in your closet. Have you tried it? If so let me know what and how you styled it? Send me pictures I would love to share.

Cleanse my Soul & Renew my Spirit

Hey Divas, last week I mentioned how God was testing me. It’s by no mistake when this happens. Whew boy is he not only testing me but seriously pushing me to look at myself to grow. I swear this quarantine Pandemic Coronavirus of 2020 has shown me some ugly truths about myself and my past. I say ugly but I truly mean deep-rooted issues that I had no idea even existed. I am honestly happy that God is showing me these things because it allows me to change now before I allow these things to affect my marriage and future children.
image00042
I like to call this season a cleansing of the soul and a renewing of the spirit. Today’s meditation scripture comes from Pslams 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Have you ever heard your parents or a wise elder say be careful what you wish for… Well, I must say I had been praying this prayer and here I am now. God is truly working on me and I know I have a long way to go but during this time I have been finding myself praising and understanding more about myself and things that didn’t make sense before are now. I have learned that I have full control over my mind body and spirit. I choose to allow God to guide me through this thing we call life.

image00035
For that, I am pleased with the journey that I am on. Has God been cleansing your soul or renewing your spirit? I would love to know so let’s chat! Have a good Monday and stay focused.

Friday’s are for winding down, chilling out wrapping up the long week you had. We will keep it light and simple for today’s blog. First off let me pat myself on the back for writing 5 blogs this week and staying consistent. Shout out to my girl Daniesha for putting me up to the challenge… I di it now let’s make a habit out of it.

image00057

Speaking of keeping it simple and light most of you know I love to eat. I eat just about anything… well there’s something on my list that I don’t enjoy, however, fruit is at the top of my list. So why not start your day off with a wonderful fruit smoothie. I love drinking smoothies in the morning 1 because they are light, tasty, healthy, and give me a boost of energy.

element5-digital-acrBf9BlfvE-unsplash

Pick Your Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup strawberries
  • 1/4 cup of banans
  • 1/4 cup pineapple
  • spinach – I just throw some in there
  • 1/2 cup of almond milk/soy milk vanilla flavored
  • 1/2 cup of ice
  • splash of apple juice or any type of fruit juice you like (optional)
  • 1/4 cup of frozen yogurt (optional)
  • Ice I like my smoothies sometimes chunky and the ice does the trick
  • You may add protein or fiber supplements if you like.

Blend It Up

You may use frozen or fresh fruit.  I like to use fresh as freezing fruits and vegetables sometimes the nutritional value is a loss. Now here’s the fun part put all your ingredients in the blender. Run your blender for a good minute to make sure everything is blended together. This recipe is for 1 serving double the servings to make more.

melissa-walker-horn-_LV5xfsg2y4-unsplash

That’s it or into your favorite cup or I like to be boujee and our it into a glass mug with a metal straw this way each sip is cold! Now, this is how you start your weekend off right! Enjoy and let me know what smoothies you love to drink.

image00067

Did you think I would forget to give you all some details on my fun weekend outfit? I threw this outfit together pairing this fund colors blouse that can be worn tucked in our out or even tied in the front for a crop top illusion. These pink shorts – get used to them cause they are one of my favorite pairs. They are comfortable and give you a cute weekend look. You have seen these platform Michael Kors sneakers that I scored from Poshmark for $30. I’m telling you’ll don’t sleep on Poshmark it will get you right! That’s it – what fun outfits are you wearing this weekend?

Many of you know that I barely wear any makeup except eyeliner, mascara, and of course, I love a good lippie. Now my girl Daniesha put me onto some bomb lipsticks, however, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Mented Cosmetics. I have heard such great reviews about their products and I must admit I had to try it.

They created this line “every woman should be able to find herself in the world of beauty, no matter her skin tone. We know you’ll love being put first – because when it comes to beauty, no one deserves to be an afterthought.”  Each of their products is perfectly pigMENTED to match your skin tone.

Obtaining Essentials During #Corona

image00037

Hi, ladybugs and fashionistas I swear when I have a baby- and if it’s a girl her nickname will be ladybug! As time passes and the virus lingers – many people are opting to say “F” and return to normal. But what is the new normal? Should we still take precautions or should we be in the mindset of whatever happens-happens? I think that is truly up the individual but I for one will not be living life as I use too. I already can be a pretty germophobic person when it comes to certain things. I already carried hand sanitizer, Lysol wipes all of that with me and I never use to touch the pumps at the gas station. So today I will be sharing where I have been finding my essentials without having to go to the store for these items.

Places to Shop for your Essentials

  • Instacart: I decided to try Instacart for the first time. I must admit there are some learning curves. However, I have been ordering for about 6 weeks now and I have been pretty satisfied with the delivery. The app itself is easy to use. Finding products depend on the location of the store you are ordering from. You aren’t able to change the store location- location is based on your delivery location. I honestly prefer the Kroger that is 15 minutes from my house instead of the one that is 5 minutes. However I can’t be that picky in the middle of all this. My shoppers all have been great with texting me via the app if an item is not available or sending me pictures of the items. Although the app says you are unable to add an item after the shopper has started shopping – I have added items and the shopper gladly found it. All shoppers have delivered in a timely fashion and have been pleasant. Now the learning curve is when you are trying to order fruit and vegetables. For example: when it says to select the amount tomatoes it doesn’t mean a bunch (on a vine) it means 1 – single tomato. I messed up and order 1 banana and received 1 banana. Also, don’t forget you will be charged a delivery fee and you must tip your shopper this can add an extra $6-$10 depending on location. If you sign up for the $9 delivery service for a month you will max that out within 2 deliveries trust me its a good deal! My overall experience has been great!

image00031

  • Sam Club: Offers a pickup service in my area they are not yet on Instacart so I decided to order the items online and pick it up. What I didn’t know was that I would have to go in and pick up my items at the guest services counter. This experience was ok. I can’t give it 5 stars because I waited in my car for 10 minutes after I had selected the “I’m Here” button to notify the employees that I was there and waiting in the loading zone. Upon going in both times my order was ready but you have to bring in your basket for them to load your cart up. You are allowed to designate someone else to pick up your order if need be. If any of your items are not available for pickup they will ship it to you within the next 3-5 days. I will order again only because walking through Costco or Sams can be crazy – after I do that run I need a nap.

image00026

  • Amazon: As we all know Amazon was probably the first place everyone went shopping when the pandemic broke out and delivery options were pushed out to 3 weeks or longer. Amazon is getting back to normal as I have only had to wait 3 days for my items which is pretty much back to their 2-day shipping. Certain items are still out of stock. However I recently I decided to passion twist my hair and I order hair, accessories, and everything I would need to create this style, and surprisingly I was so pleased! Please with the quality of the hair and my order came within a week instead of 3.
  • Pick up Services: Mostly every grocery, clothing stores, restaurants, and other convenient stores are offering pickup services.

image00033

As time goes on places are opening up and people are trying to find the new normal. I will be shelling in place for a while until I see the curve declining. I still do not feel comfortable venturing out to heavily populated places without masks, gloves, and sanitizer. I have faith and yes God is still in control but I will do my best to stay siloed a little while longer. oh yes, and a helpful tip, before bringing in your groceries it’s a good idea to wipe all of your items off with Clorox wipes except fruit and veggies. Those can be washed off! How have you been obtaining your essentials?

Outfit During the Rona

Let me give you the details of this outfit. I’m calling my summer vibes with this one. The dress is Giani Bini – purchased this cute little number from Poshmark for $15. My cute high top sneakers are from Justfab – beware the sizing is off so I would size up a whole shoe size but for the price I paid I am not mad. The hat is also from Justfab, and my purse is old from TjMaxx.

image00023

How are you ladies doing? It’s been a while as I have been swamped with work (thankful to still be employed) and I’ve been so not motivated! However it’s time to shake it off and get back to the grind. I need to start focusing on my business as I have let that fall by the wayside. I told you all in a previous post that I would share more about ‘More Than A Girl Boss’ I totally have not forgotten just give me the time to dive deep and fully explain all the goods and goodies of what that is. However today’s post is all about what to wear during this pandemic.

image00018-1

I am so tired of reading, hearing about the number of deaths from the previous day, and new case stats. The truth is there’s no escaping it it’s all around us and silent. But guess what that isn’t going to stop me from being cute and comfortable inside the house. For the record I do live in Georgia and yes this state has pretty much fully reopened – but I plan to ride this wave from my couch. Let me know if you would like a list of how I have been getting by without going to the stores to still receive all my essentials!

image00011

Let’s dive into these good ole lounge outfits.

  1. New York and Company: We all know that this is my favorite store and I am constantly ranting and raving about their clothes. Yes, it’s true even their loungewear, sweats, house dresses are amazing and comfortable. From matching linen outfits to cute screen tee tanks that will have you making a statement without speaking. Here’s where you may find all the NY goodies.
  2. Zara: Zara has always been a favorite of mine but that doesn’t mean I always could afford it. However, over the years I have become more of a savvy economical shopper and I am forever looking for a good deal. Believe it or not, Zara has amazing sales and they are always updated they special price sections weekly. Zara quality is A-Mazing! and will disappoint neither will their loungewear. They offer fine knits, t-shirts, shorts that are all cute and comfy. Some of their loungewear looks more like I’m ready to go! Click here to find Zara lounge options.
  3. ASOS: Another one of my foveate places to shop! The best thing about ASOS is that they have multiple brands to meet your every day, work, and lounge styles. From name brand to off-brand you will always be on-trend. Check out some of their loungewear here.

image00014

Okay if you didn’t guess it already, my Outfit is from. Drum roll, please…..New York & Company and ASOS. Let’s start off with my footwork since this was my birthday gift form my hubby. Sooo.. most of you all know I had surgery on my foot, so treating my feet have been on my top priority list. I have been purchasing more flats, and sneakers to dress my looks up and down. Hey, whoever said you couldn’t wear sneakers with dresses? These are the Nike Air Max – Tailwind. I wanted some funky, crazy, cool with a pop of color. these shoes are super comfortable (well they better have been for that price)! I love how this stripe cotton dress matches with these sneakers. Perfect for spring and summer for that get up and go – nowhere days… Like I said I will not be partaking in the malls, nails, hair, bowing, movie theaters, and Yes I can still praise and call on the lord from home – you will NOT catch me in anybody’s church. I love this croc backpack from Justfab that converts to a side satchel, backpack, and or regular handbag. I love it, I’ve been toting it everywhere around the house (lol).

5 Ways To Work From Home

Hi loves it’s Monday and I’m back to the grind… at home that is. Let’s be real this pandemic is making everyone rethink how we love daily. From grocery shopping, communicating and working. If you are unable to work from home during this time. My prayers are with you daily and praying that you are extra safe. If you are able to work from home I have 5 helpful tips for you not to loose your mind!

  1. Have a dedicated work space: I’ve been working from home for 2 weeks now and when I went into work for the last time it was empty. My husband told me to grab everything I possibly could since we didn’t know how long this would last. My husband being the engineer that he is made us a work station in the basement that allows natural light to shine through several windows for fresh air and enough space for me to get up stretch and sing and dance. Just enough to annoy him. Hey I have to stay positive.
  2. Create a to do list: honestly I can’t remember the app that allows me to write my to do list where I can check it off and it sends me alerts. If you know of a good one please send. I currently use my calendar and my notebook. I sometimes like to old school it. Hey ima till efficient. The to do list will keep your assignments in line.
  3. Take Breaks: this is major. When you work from home you are less likely to take a break. Why? Because you are trying to always look like your online and the computer is constantly staring at you…saying hey check your email… hey you’re at home you can finish that project.
  4. Plan meals in advanced: you all know I already meal prep but no lie my meal prepping has stopped. I’ve been making sandwiches and eating left overs for lunch. However I purchased all my meal preparation items so I am about to get back to it. Stay tuned for some healthy meal prep recipes. Please make sure you are staying hydrated. Water is key and so Andre healthy snacks.
  5. Set a routine: my routine has gotten off now that I have a few extra minutes to sleep in. However I’ve been getting up getting dressed making breakfast and at it by 8am. I try to log off by 4:30 as I normally would if I were in the office.

Do you have any work from home tips? If so let me know. Let’s get into this outfit that won’t be seen until all this over.

We are headed into April my birthday month and the cool air still tickles my cheeks in the morning. And then bam it’s blazing hot. We are still in that in between stage. This outfit is perfect for those cool morning and warm afternoons.

This crochet beaded high neck balloon sleeve blouse is perfect. I love the details and the glam it provides this entire outfit. I paired it with my high waisted pink wide leg pants. I added a simple straw striped open toed heels. Add a simple bag and you are ready to steal the show. I wore this with my sneakers to be comfortable and it looked fly what do you think?

Stay safe and fashionable at home. Xo happy fashion divas.

Staying Safe and Fashionable

image00058

Hi Fashionistas, as we know there is a shortage of household cleaning products, hand sanitizer and toilet paper. Toilet paper being the most odd on the list during this time.I have yet to figure out how toilet paper will keep you safe during this pandemic. However among many cleaning supplies you can actually make. Sometimes I like to put on my Molly DIY outfit and make it myself.. Here’s a disclaimer, DO NOT MIX CHEMICALS! for example alcohol and Clorox, or ammonia and Clorox.. that equates to a serious gaseous bomb in your kitchen. Since hand sanitizer is on the rise I thought I could give you a quick easy recipe to make your own. Also if you have kids please do not allow them to use this in large consumption as it can irritate their skin!

image00055

Hand sanitizer recipe
What you’ll need:

3/4 cup of isopropyl or rubbing alcohol (99 percent)
1/4 cup of aloe vera gel (to help keep your hands smooth and to counteract the harshness of alcohol)
10 drops of essential oil, such as lavender oil, or you can use lemon juice instead
Directions:

Pour all ingredients into a bowl, ideally one with a pouring spout like a glass measuring container.
Mix with a spoon and then beat with a whisk to turn the sanitizer into a gel.
Pour the ingredients into an empty bottle for easy use, and label it “hand sanitizer.”

Want more information on hand sanitizers check out the information from the CDC

I would only use this for extreme cases. Stick to washing you hands with soap and water as much as possible.

image00053

Okay so let’s get into this outfit. Every year I feature jumpsuits on my blog. You must know by now, that they are one of my favorite staples in my closet. Jumpsuit make a quick and stylish outfit even on your worse days. Believe it or not I needed a black jumpsuit. I have one in my closet but it’s old and needs to be retired. Thanks to my fashionistas over at Fabrik they gifted me this black utility tie waist jumpsuit. When I purchase clothes I try to find versatile pieces that I can interchange for work and play. This jumpsuit meets all the requirements. It’s super light weight, it buttons down the from and gives that professional look. I paired it with a cute fruit purse. Speaking of which you know I love fruit. For my footwork, these Katy Perry rubiks cube inspired low suede heels did the trick.
