A Fly Girl That Reads

Hey Divas, what are some of your hobbies? Many of you know that I love fashion… I am sure that’s obvious. However I am a total naturalista. I love doing all types of hair from braids, blow outs, sew in you name it and I am sure I can do it. Besides all of the beautification hobbies I do have a passion for reading.

My love for reading runs deep in my family, as my grandmother used to always takes us to the library. I specifically remember walking form her house to the Malcolm X library in San Diego California. I remember when that library was first built and Momma Doris (my grandmas name) told I and my siblings that reading is very important. And at that moment is when she got us our first library card. I never went without a library card since then!

I always enjoyed reading however eldest sister Lawan.. or should I name her by her author names, Yvette Hines and Monique Lamont, introduced me to “Fly Girl” by Omar Tyree. Every since then it was history! I instantly became a book worm, a book junkie, I had to have it. My sister soon started to write her own contemporary romance and erotic novels. Some of which she never let me read until I was married. 🙂 Some of my favorite novels from my sister are Yvette Hines, The Marriage Clause. This  book is everything you would want and more in a romance novel. You will cry, laugh, oooh and awh. To name a few more are One Reckless night and from Monique Lamont is Fire and Desire. She has many many more to satisfy your book appetite this is only a few. My sister has one best Author of the year award twice! You can google her and of course you can find her books fully stocked on Amazon and check out Barnes and noble.

Moving right along, Mary B. Morrison is another one of my favorites. As she writes everything under the sun as well. I had the opportunity to meet her and many other fly girls who write and read at the AAMBC Literacy Awards “We Read Mixer” Which was hosted by Talia O. Myss Shan write urban novels that will make you feel like you need a solider, but is the solider worth fighting for? I actually have one of her books packed in my suitcase for business travel this week! Tamika Newhouse, just like her social media handle she is truly a boss chick! She is the CEO and founder of the African American writers, called the AAMBC Literary Awards. If you are looking for a juicy read for a Friday night snag one of her books you won’t be disappointed. Let’s not forget the Legendary Laquita. I must say she is legendary as she made my soul move as her and the other fly girls dove head first into some serious issues in the African American community. She’s a firecracker with a bundle of knowledge. Catch her if you can she was ghsot writer! If you have the opportunity to attend one of the AAMBC mixers, please do so, this will be a few hours well spent! I can’t wait to see what’s in store this coming summer and fall.

With all the book worm talk let’s get into this fly girl outfit! Let’s start from head to toe. I am rocking this handmade headband from Bold Look Head wraps. I thought this print went well with my fly girl t-shirt from the mixer and the army pants said power, edge, motivation, it just gave me life to this look! These pants are of course from New York and Company, out of stock now but I will leave a similar pair below. Topping this look off with one of my favorite red strap up heels from JustFab.

What are your hobbies? Do you love to read if so who are your favorite authors?

Who remembers the hit 90’s show called “A Different World”? let me run it back for you.

It’s a different world,
It’s a different world,
Than where you come from
Than where you come from

However this TV show was more than just a black sitcom. It was a mere glimpse into black society, our views, vision, our culture and history that many people do not know. I was just a young tot when this show aired but I knew that this show did not depict African American’s as hoes, thugs, jail burgs, dope heads or a low life. Yes there are real African American American Families that have education, yes there are African American’s that have both parents at home, yes there are African American families where both parents have jobs.. and not just a job but a career, doctors, lawyers, directors, many among the prestigious community. This show showed African Americans from all era’s, the arts, the struggle of why, who, what, when and where.

Hillman College was not just a dream but it became reality for me when I was accepted to Norfolk State University in 2005. NSU is one of the few colleges that African Americans were allowed to attended.  I entered as a freshman Spring of 2006 and the rest was history. I could not be more proud to attend a HBCU ( Historical Black College). A college that stood for power, strength and overcoming a true challenge and gaining something (education) that was stripped from us generations ago. Below is a snippet of Whitley one of the main characters explaining why she choose to attend and HBCU.

So I am sure everyone wants the details on this outfit after this history lesson!  Starting from top to bottom. As you all know I love burgundy, so I opted for the burgundy Hillman sweatshirt, it also comes in grey and burgundy. I decided to spice it up by adding my leopard print Michael Kors blouse underneath. I thought this gave the perfect edge. I kept it pretty basic on the bottom with a pair of jeggins and my burgundy hounds-tooth velvet print sneakers from JustFab! My accessories include a matching quilted purse and my shades from NY&CO. I had a lot of fun with this look as it took me back to my undergrad years! If you purchase any items from Hillman Book Store, they make you feel as if you were just accepted to college. Your order will arrive with the item you purchased, an acceptance letter, a freshman class flyer and a sticker. How cool is that!
