Hi Divas – it’s officially summer! When it gets hot and humid I instantly look for a protective style for my hair. So one may ask what is a protective style and why?
- Protective styling is when you braid, twist, bun or put your hair in a style that is low maintenance that holds oil and moisture. The heat, and humidity can be very harsh on natural hair. Which can cause, it to become dry, brittle and break off.
I recently linked up with my best friend who has a soft curly hair. We decided to pick faux locs as her protective style. There’s many different ways to achieve this look, but we opted to crochet pre looped FreeTress faux locs into her hair. This was actually my first time using pre looped hair and when i say it’s one of the best hair inventions ever. I was able to wash, blow dry and install the locs all within an hour and half! See below for each step to achieve this look.
- Start off on freshly washed hair. Make sure to deep condition and oil your scalp either prior to braiding or after braiding.
- Braid your hair. The braid pattern is important to achieve the look you want. I braided a horizontal perimeter braid in the back so that my friend would be able to put her hair up if she wanted too. I started at the bottom and braided each row into each other leaving one braid loose. I eventually crocheted the loose braid into the braided hair.
- Install the locs. This is pretty simple and self explanatory. Let me know if you need a tutorial on his to install crochet hair. However you first start off by inserting your needle into one of the braids. Place the loop on the hook and make sure the claps is closed before pulling the needle outward. Once you have pulled the hair through the braid you will only need to to pull the locs through the loop once. I double knotted a few just for extra security.
- I recommend to place each loc about a dime size apart. Once you have completed the entire head you can go back and fill in any gaps.
It’s just as simple as that. I recommend to oil your scalp with tee tree oil, jamaican black castor oil, olive oil, coconut oil. I often mix in jojoba and grapeseed oil to my mixture as well. Also I like to spray leave in conditioner in my hair to keep it thoroughly moisturized. Make sure to wrap your hair up at night with a satin scarf or a braid cap.
What is one of your favorite protective styles? How do you maintain your style?
Xo happy hair divas!
Don’t you just love a good jumpsuit that make waking up and looking good easy? First of all since I am petite I love finding pieces that will make me look like I have a little bit more than what I actually have 😉
This jacquard tribal print jumpsuit from TJMaxx is perfect for a weekend look. I love the sweetheart neckline, with the straps and of course it has pockets!! I paired this look with a black straw sun hat hauls from H&M. To top this look off I decided to bedazzle the foot work with these lace up tribal inspired sandals… can you guess from where..JustFab!

I’m back with a curly girl hair style that will have you feeling playful! So yes as we know, I love me a twist out. But why not switch it up and try some different products!
No harm in that! So I got my hands on this Garner Fructis curling gel, and I must say It smells so fruity I thought I was going to curl my way to a sandy beach island! Okay okay maybe not quiet an island.
This product is not sticky, it’s very light, smells good and it full of nutrients and all that good stuff for your hair! So If you do not know how to do a twist out I’ll refer you to watch one of my earlier YouTube video How to do a Twist Out.
This product actually worked well on my hair! It has a soft -no crunchy hold, however my curls are super defined and still look fresh after 4 days! When it comes to my hair.. any signs of fuzz.. or if the curl starts to get super stretched i’m ready to retest, co-wash and do it all over!!
Anyways do I like this product?: Yes!
Do i recommend you try it?: Yes
Is it cheap?: The cost was reasonable

But for now happy hair Divas..
So my hair has gone flat and the humidity got to my hair from all of the Hot Atlanta Heat! So I decided to add some curl body and bounce to my hair. Flexi Rods are a great way to add curl and definition to your hair. I will be showing you how to get a super defined curl using flexi rods.
Products & tools
- Hood Dryer (you can also air dry your hair, its totally up to you!)
- Lotta Body setting lotion
- Spray bottle
- Hair clips
- Flexi rods
- Oil of your choice
Tip: Pout 2 parts water and 2 parts Lotta Body into the spray bottle. This dilutes the Lotta Body since its very thick. it allows you hair to dry faster.
Step 1: make sure your hair is detangled make a part in the front of your hair. this is totally up to you.
Step 2: make a part in the back of your hair. Clip the rest of your hair up and away. divide that part into sections.
Step 3: Spary the Lotta Body onto one of the sections. Now take your flexi rod and begin wrapping the hair around the rod form the bottom. when you wrap your hair around the rod do a 360 degree turn and twist on the rod. (please view my video for more instructions)
Step 4: Repeat all over your hair. Sit under the hooded dryer or air dry. I ended up sitting under the hooded dryer but then I fell asleep.
Step 5: Untwist your hair off the rod. Once all the rods are out of your hair, add oil to your fingers and run all over your hair. The oil helps reduce frizz.
Step 6: Divide curls into smaller strands. make sure to separate each curl gently and curl it around your finger.
Step 7: Pick out your roots with a wide tooth comb. Shake and fluff!
Bam Super Defined Curls using flexi rods. Note that this was done on straightened hair.

How it worked on my hair?
Ladies if you didn’t know I have natural hair that natural waves, and curls. I did add any oil or other products to my hair besides a heat protectant when I blow dried my hair. So as you can see I my hair is blow dried out.
I tried the one pass test with using a chunky piece of hair. Now for black women usually the smaller and thinner the hair is you will obtain better smoother and straighter results. This is my thick piece of hair.
This was my results from only going through my hair one time. I was highly shocked to see such great results. When I saw martini do this on TV I was shocked and was like okay I must try this!
However I still went ahead and did a second pass and curled my hair while straightening it. I have never achieved such great results without using the chase method or any type of oils. This flat-iron left my hair shiny full of body and bounce.
My Favorite feature
This flat-iron is gold titanium plated and the plates tilt in the direction you are flat ironing your hair. this is a great feature when you are curling your hair. It makes the hair glide easily when turning your hair to curl it!
Ladies I wouldn’t lie to, this flat iron is must try! So no more frying and bring your hair, trust me your hair will thank you.

Todays blog is about how to deep condition your hair. I have several deep conditioning regimes depending on what my hair needs! This method is very basic and easy and I use it as often as once a month. So lets dive into the goodness!
- Edens all natural deep conditioner/ or your favorite deep conditioner(3-4 scoops depending on hair length)
- Olive oil (1 teaspoon)
- Tea Tree Oil (3-4 squirts)
- Coconut oil (1 teaspoon)
- Deep conditioning cap
- applicator brush
- Cantu Shea butter-wash out conditioner (you will need this to co-wash your hair after you have rinsed out the deep conditioner)
- Mix the ingredients together!!
Step 1: Wash your hair thoroughly. I use the Cantu Shea Butter natural shampoo and conditioner. This is a good time to detangle your hair and put it into 4 sections. This will help when applying the deep conditioner.
Step 2: Towel dry your hair, leaving it damp. Now take down one of the sections and apply the deep conditioner. I like to use the applicator brush for my roots. make sure to apply the conditioner to the tips of your hair and rake through. Now you should have 4 equal parts with conditioner.
Step 3: Once you have applied the deep conditioner to all of your head, apply the deep conditioning cap to you head for 15-30 minutes depending on your regime. I like to leave it on for at least 30 minutes to an hour. Also if you re not in a hurry try sitting under a bonnet hair dryer, it allows the oils and conditioner to penetrate the shafts of your hair.
Step 4: Rinse out the deep conditioner thoroughly. Do Not shampoo your hair. Shampooing will remove the soft oils that were just applied to your hair.
Step 5: Co-wash your hair. I like to do this just to seal my hair. This leaves my hair feeling extra soft. To cows you hair use any rinse out conditioner to your liking. apply conditioner massage in and rinse out.
Results: Your hair should be shinny, extra soft and light weight. After deep conditioning your hair should be more manageable for any style. I decided to straighten my hair. The deep conditioner allowed me to use less heat and to easily flat iron my hair.
Leave me a message below if you like this regime and tutorial and what else you would like to know about hair!!
