Big Hair and Bold Colors

IMG_4760

Spring and summer are all about being colorful. With this outfit I know I mastered just that. I love mixing colors, prints and textures. It allows my creativity to be free and unique.

IMG_4763IMG_4764

With this outfit I went all in with the colors. Here are a few helpful tips to achieve a multicolor outfit with a print.

  1. Choose either a shirt, skirt, pants or shorts with a bold and big print. weather it’s on top or bottom that doesn’t make a difference
  2. Pick a sold color shirt or bottom or a complimentary print that is either small or large in size.
  3. When this i done correctly your print and solid or print on print should even out. Where one does not look heavy on the top or bottom.
  4. As far as my accessories, I chose one of the colors from the skirt, and chose an opposite color for my shoes.

IMG_4758IMG_4762

This skirt offers a bold multi-colored abstract print, that I absolutely adore. Only $13 from Shein official, I couldn’t help myself but to snag it. Please note that this skirt comes in one size fit all I am very small and petite and it fit me just right. however it does have an elastic stretch band in the back.  The fringe in my purse provides the texture and my shoes provide simplicity. This outfit is super easy and I love the slogan Yas Curl! why? because my curls are popping. Check out hello tee for fun sayings that support natural hair and black culture.

Are you brave enough to rock and outfit as bold as this? Let me know in the comment section below.

Happy Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is time to celebrate your mom, grandmother, aunts, sisters, friends or anyone that has been in your life that has children. For many this can be a day of remembering our loss loved ones. In my eyes being a mother is not easy.. a mother wears many hats, uptakes many roles and ultimately keeps the daily, yearly and future rolling!

IMG_1523IMG_4746

Today I want to recognize my twin, my rock, my warm peach, my mom. Teresa Lynn (Salone) Shakoor was born on August 12, 1954 in San Diego California, to Robert and Doris Salone. She is the youngest of 3 and loves to sing, dance, care for others and can cook a mean peach and sweet potato pie! After graduating Lincoln High school.. yes where the black panthers marched to protect their fellow brethern! She went on to San Diego City college and received a certificate in administration from Kellsy Jenny College. Not many years after she married William Perry Thornton aka Rashad Shakoor. Yep that’s how I became Tupacs cousin! My mom joined forces with my father by opening Shure-Core cutting company, which was the first black owned construction company in San Diego. Looking back today a lot of the bridges, bypasses and other foundational structures in San Diego where built by my dad and administered by my mom. Pretty cool I’ll say!

The construction company was not the only company in the shakoor family, as I said before my mom can cook a mean meal! Well soon Teresa’s fine foods was born. By this time my mom had for kids me being the youngest.. and her only side kick was our momma Doris ( her mom). She managed to raise 4 kids, be a devoted wife, and run a full time business. Although the food train came to an end it didn’t stop her famous potato salad from becoming world famous.. When I say world famous I mean famous in the African American community. My mom catered her potato salad to the military making sometimes over 60 pounds of potato salad. her potato salad was such a hit that she was personally asked to cater a luncheon for the Shabazz family! Yes the one and only Malcolm X family.

IMG_1517IMG_4743

my mom landed a job with the San Diego Union Tribune where she work, the classified ads, and then managed the obituary column. Being a key role to a huge newspaper didn’t slow down my mom at home nor her fashion! Did you think I would forget. You all know how much I love my om and her style, it’s where I gain inspiration. My mom was a hot stepper at work and even at home! I always remember shopping with my mom at Robinsons May which is now Macy’s and many other department stores. From her hair to her shoes she never missed a beat.

Let’s fast forward, after my parents divorce, my mom moved 3 of her 4 kids to Virginia where I and my sister completed our bachelors degree from Norfolk State University, only following in our brother and other older sister’s footsteps. Our educational train didn’t stop there as we all today have our master’s degree in various fields.

Through many hardships that my mom faced she never gave up on her determination to be a good mother to her children, to motivate to get all of us through college, and to trust in God. One thing she wanted for all of us was to be better than her and to get an education. We all did just that! We owe that strength, long hours of studying and student loan debt to her 🙂 (but that’s good debt I’ll say) Today my mom still hasn’t missed a beat, as she recently retired from being a medical assistant from Sentera Hospital and is planning on traveling and of course spending time with her grandchildren. (not mine yet!)

IMG_1521IMG_4739

I owe so much to this strong, beautiful, godly women, words honestly can’t explain. This is only a snippet into what I can write about my warm peach. I know if you have ever met here she has truly warm your heart and soul. She is truly my twin that I can’t help be more than alike. Today is to you mom, love you

I figured recreating some of my moms steller looks would be an awesome blog for today. I remember looking at these pictures year after year, saying to myself I am going to look like that when I get older, or I can’t wait to dress so nice…(as if she didn’t already dress me well). Tell me your fondest memories of your mom or any special women in your life.

Twist out + Garnier Fructis Product Review

Divas,

I’m back with a curly girl hair style that will have you feeling playful! So yes as we know, I love me a twist out. But why not switch it up and try some different products!

No harm in that! So I got my hands on this Garner Fructis curling gel, and I must say It smells so fruity I thought I was going to curl my way to a sandy beach island! Okay okay maybe not quiet an island.

First Impression

This product is not sticky, it’s very light, smells good and it full of nutrients and all that good stuff for your hair! So If you do not know how to do a twist out I’ll refer you to watch one of my earlier YouTube video  How to do a Twist Out.

This product actually worked well on my hair! It has a soft -no crunchy hold, however my curls are super defined and still look fresh after 4 days! When it comes to my hair.. any signs of fuzz.. or if the curl starts to get super stretched i’m ready to retest, co-wash and do it all over!!

Anyways do I like this product?: Yes!

Do i recommend you try it?: Yes

Is it cheap?: The cost was reasonable

Super Defined Curls Using Flexi Rods

Divas,

So my hair has gone flat and the humidity got to my hair from all of the Hot Atlanta Heat! So I decided to add some curl body and bounce to my hair. Flexi Rods are a great way to add curl and definition to your hair. I will be showing you how to get a super defined curl using flexi rods.

Products & tools

  • Comb
  • Hood Dryer (you can also air dry your hair, its totally up to you!)
  • Lotta Body setting lotion
  • Spray bottle
  • Hair clips
  • Flexi rods
  • Oil of your choice

Tip: Pout 2 parts water and 2 parts Lotta Body into the spray bottle. This dilutes the Lotta Body since its very thick. it allows you hair to dry faster.

Step 1: make sure your hair is detangled make a part in the front of your hair. this is totally up to you.

Step 2: make a part in the back of your hair. Clip the rest of your hair up and away. divide that part into sections.

Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 6.17.29 PM Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 6.16.57 PM

Step 3: Spary the Lotta Body onto one of the sections. Now take your flexi rod and begin wrapping the hair around the rod form the bottom. when you wrap your hair around the rod do a 360 degree turn and twist on the rod. (please view my video for more instructions)

Step 4: Repeat all over your hair. Sit under the hooded dryer or air dry. I ended up sitting under the hooded dryer but then I fell asleep.

Step 5: Untwist your hair off the rod. Once all the rods are out of your hair, add oil to your fingers and run all over your hair. The oil helps reduce frizz.

Martino Cartier Flat Iron Review

Divas,

Have you been searching for the perfect flat-iron?? Well I have found it!! Finally after searching for years for  good flat-iron, this martini Cartier Flat iron has replaced my ceramic flat-iron that broke years ago. I have fried, heat damaged my hair trying to get my hair straight. This flat iron was purchased for $50 during the on TV ad special promotion. It is online at HSN.com for $119.00 So with all of that being said I introduce to you the Martino Cartier Flat Iron.

How it worked on my hair?

Ladies if you didn’t know I have natural hair that natural waves, and curls. I did add any oil or other products to my hair besides a heat protectant when I blow dried my hair. So as you can see I my hair is blow dried out.

Screen Shot 2015-08-02 at 3.42.41 PM

I tried the one pass test with using a chunky piece of hair. Now for black women usually the smaller and thinner the hair is you will obtain better smoother and straighter results. This is my thick piece of hair.

Screen Shot 2015-08-02 at 3.43.44 PM

This was my results from only going through my hair one time. I was highly shocked to see such great results. When I saw martini do this on TV I was shocked and was like okay I must try this!

Screen Shot 2015-08-02 at 3.44.11 PM

However I still went ahead and did a second pass and curled my hair while straightening it. I have never achieved such great results without using the chase method or any type of oils. This flat-iron left my hair shiny full of body and bounce.

My Favorite feature

This flat-iron is gold titanium plated and the plates tilt in the direction you are flat ironing your hair. this is a great feature when you are curling your hair. It makes the hair glide easily when turning your hair to curl it!

Screen Shot 2015-08-02 at 3.43.04 PM

Ladies I wouldn’t lie to, this flat iron is must try! So no more frying and bring your hair, trust me your hair will thank you.

Step 3: Blow dry hair. Ladies I like to blow dry my hair or my clients hair when I am doing braided styles it makes it easier for me to to manage the hair. Please place your blow dryer on a temperature that is safe for your hair. I like to use either 200-350m degrees depending on what style i am trying to achieve.

Step 4: Part the hair from ear to ear in a horizontal line. This will play as a guideline for where the braids need to meet.

IMG_3257

Step 5: Make your first part. I start my first part on the right side by the ear. This will act as a guide for the rest of my braids

Step 6: Divide synthetic hair into 4 different size strands. you first 2 strands should be very thin the other 2 pieces should be medium size. (please refer to video)

IMG_3260

Step 7: Start off by braiding natural hair first. Grab a piece of the thin synthetic hair and add it into the hair. braid again and add another. You will want to add the hair as you braid on. Continue to braid the hair all the way down.

IMG_3254

Step 8: Braid entire head.

Step 9: once you hair braided all of the hair oil the scalp in-between each braid. Pull all of the braids into a ponytail.

Step 10: Boil water. Dip the ends of the hair into the water to seal the hair. (Caution!!! make sure you have a towel handy to dry the hair. Note if this is yoghurts time doing this ask for help!!! the water will be very hot and you don not want to burn your client or yourself)

Step 11: Apply foam wrap to hair. Wrap your hair with a silk wrap and dry the hair for about 5-10 minutes. Apply argon oil to seal the hair.

IMG_3258IMG_3259

And that is it!!! Easy summer protective style!!!
