The Colorful Giraffe

Hey Divas,

Random question, what is your favorite animal? Mine just so happens to be giraffes. I love how gracefully they walk, how tall they are, their wonderful spotted print and of course their bold eyes with those long eyelashes. I honestly believe that where us human got the idea of elongating mascara from!

IMG_5191

If you guessed that I was drawn to this dress because of the print. You are absolutely right. It looks like a colorful giraffe to me. I have been on the hunt for several maxi dresses and this one satisfied my fashion sweet tooth. This dress is from New York and Company the Eva Mendes line of course!

This maxi dress is great for many reason.

  • It’s long… if it wasn’t it wouldn’t be a maxi dress (duhh)
  • Very light material
  • Thin under lining,
  • Pockets
  • Awesome rope detailing around the waist and acts as straps
  • Multi color print

IMG_5208

You know my theme for this summer is in living color and this tops off this them. I will admit that this dress is extra extra long. I am 5’3 1/2 so I pulled out my 5″ JustFab purple fringe heels with this dress. I will most likely have this tailored so it’s not dragging on the floor. Topping this look off with my orange fringe purse and yellow beaded earring form JcPenny will definitely have heads turning. This dress is great for a hot summer day, week-ending, and of course a hot date. Take you pick!

Faux Locs a Protective Style

Hi Divas – it’s officially summer! When it gets hot and humid I instantly look for a protective style for my hair. So one may ask what is a protective style and why?

  • Protective styling is when you braid, twist, bun or put your hair in a style that is low maintenance that holds oil and moisture. The heat, and humidity can be very harsh on natural hair. Which can cause, it to become dry, brittle and break off.

I recently linked up with my best friend who has a soft curly hair. We decided to pick faux locs as her protective style. There’s many different ways to achieve this look, but we opted to crochet pre looped FreeTress faux locs into her hair. This was actually my first time using pre looped hair and when i say it’s one of the best hair inventions ever. I was able to wash, blow dry and install the locs all within an hour and half! See below for each step to achieve this look.

  1. Start off on freshly washed hair. Make sure to deep condition and oil your scalp either prior to braiding or after braiding.
  2. Braid your hair. The braid pattern is important to achieve the look you want. I braided a horizontal perimeter braid in the back so that my friend would be able to put her hair up if she wanted too. I started at the bottom and braided each row into each other leaving one braid loose. I eventually crocheted the loose braid into the braided hair.

  3. Install the locs. This is pretty simple and self explanatory. Let me know if you need a tutorial on his to install crochet hair. However you first start off by inserting your needle into one of the braids. Place the loop on the hook and make sure the claps is closed before pulling the needle outward. Once you have pulled the hair through the braid you will only need to to pull the locs through the loop once. I double knotted a few just for extra security.
  4. I recommend to place each loc about a dime size apart. Once you have completed the entire head you can go back and fill in any gaps. IMG_4573

It’s just as simple as that. I recommend to oil your scalp with tee tree oil, jamaican black castor oil, olive oil, coconut oil. I often mix in jojoba and grapeseed oil to my mixture as well. Also I like to spray leave in conditioner in my hair to keep it thoroughly moisturized. Make sure to wrap your hair up at night with a satin scarf or a braid cap.

Easy Outfit For The Everyday Fashionista

Hey divas, sometimes it’s hard to get up and go and always look good. Work, life, kids, daily tasks can take a toll on us. However just because you are tired, lazy or not in the mood doesn’t mean you have to throw on sweats flip flops and a wrap.. Don’t be that lady that everyone points at and think you woke up on the wrong side of the bed. INstead give them some Sasha fierce and say “I woke up like this..”

IMG_4789

When I am feeling lazy or in a rut I always pick my go to jumpsuit. I absolutely love jumpsuits. Why?

  1. You are all thing fab!
  2. jumpsuits can be dressed up or down depending on the style. I like to have a variety of casual, and dressy jumpsuits
  3. One stop outfit. it’s a complete look in one
  4. You are never under or over dressed for any occasion
  5. Try to find the loose fitting or the wide leg jumpsuits you will be able to be more versatile with this style. A tapered leg is fine to just be careful for what look you are going for!
  6. Helpful tip for your body type: If you are curvy, try to find jumpsuit that have a waist band, or tie. Something that will pull you in and show your figure. If you are petite like me with not many curves, I try to go for the same look, it gives me the illusion that I have something! Most jumpsuits accentuate the waist area which is awesome because most women want to create the hour glass shape!

IMG_4787

The jumpsuit I am wearing is from Shein official. You have heard me mention this online boutique before. SOme items can be hit or miss so pay attention to sizing, and since it is an asian based boutique sizing does run small. I choose this white light weight jumpsuit, because of the beautiful lace crochet detailing on the bust area. It has a cut out band around the midriff area just giving you enough peekaboo to be sexy. this jumpsuit comes with a shorts lining underneath which is great for those hot summer days. I paired this with my eyelet white wedges from JCPenney (these are so old but look new) and an all white clutch from Charming Charlie. Outfit made simple!

IMG_4793

Jumpsuits are so not new, more like reinvented from the past. They come in a variety of colors, prints, and styles. I recommend that everyone at least has to in their wardrobe. this is a must have spring essential.

IMG_4795

I love jumpsuits so much you will be seeing quite a few on this blog this summer! Let me know what are your favorite, colors and styles of jumpsuits you like.

Big Hair and Bold Colors

IMG_4760

Spring and summer are all about being colorful. With this outfit I know I mastered just that. I love mixing colors, prints and textures. It allows my creativity to be free and unique.

IMG_4763IMG_4764

With this outfit I went all in with the colors. Here are a few helpful tips to achieve a multicolor outfit with a print.

  1. Choose either a shirt, skirt, pants or shorts with a bold and big print. weather it’s on top or bottom that doesn’t make a difference
  2. Pick a sold color shirt or bottom or a complimentary print that is either small or large in size.
  3. When this i done correctly your print and solid or print on print should even out. Where one does not look heavy on the top or bottom.
  4. As far as my accessories, I chose one of the colors from the skirt, and chose an opposite color for my shoes.

IMG_4758IMG_4762

This skirt offers a bold multi-colored abstract print, that I absolutely adore. Only $13 from Shein official, I couldn’t help myself but to snag it. Please note that this skirt comes in one size fit all I am very small and petite and it fit me just right. however it does have an elastic stretch band in the back.¬† The fringe in my purse provides the texture and my shoes provide simplicity. This outfit is super easy and I love the slogan Yas Curl! why? because my curls are popping. Check out hello tee for fun sayings that support natural hair and black culture.

Are you brave enough to rock and outfit as bold as this? Let me know in the comment section below.

Happy Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is time to celebrate your mom, grandmother, aunts, sisters, friends or anyone that has been in your life that has children. For many this can be a day of remembering our loss loved ones. In my eyes being a mother is not easy.. a mother wears many hats, uptakes many roles and ultimately keeps the daily, yearly and future rolling!

IMG_1523IMG_4746

Today I want to recognize my twin, my rock, my warm peach, my mom. Teresa Lynn (Salone) Shakoor was born on August 12, 1954 in San Diego California, to Robert and Doris Salone. She is the youngest of 3 and loves to sing, dance, care for others and can cook a mean peach and sweet potato pie! After graduating Lincoln High school.. yes where the black panthers marched to protect their fellow brethern! She went on to San Diego City college and received a certificate in administration from Kellsy Jenny College. Not many years after she married William Perry Thornton aka Rashad Shakoor. Yep that’s how I became Tupacs cousin! My mom joined forces with my father by opening Shure-Core cutting company, which was the first black owned construction company in San Diego. Looking back today a lot of the bridges, bypasses and other foundational structures in San Diego where built by my dad and administered by my mom. Pretty cool I’ll say!

The construction company was not the only company in the shakoor family, as I said before my mom can cook a mean meal! Well soon Teresa’s fine foods was born. By this time my mom had for kids me being the youngest.. and her only side kick was our momma Doris ( her mom). She managed to raise 4 kids, be a devoted wife, and run a full time business. Although the food train came to an end it didn’t stop her famous potato salad from becoming world famous.. When I say world famous I mean famous in the African American community. My mom catered her potato salad to the military making sometimes over 60 pounds of potato salad. her potato salad was such a hit that she was personally asked to cater a luncheon for the Shabazz family! Yes the one and only Malcolm X family.

IMG_1517IMG_4743

my mom landed a job with the San Diego Union Tribune where she work, the classified ads, and then managed the obituary column. Being a key role to a huge newspaper didn’t slow down my mom at home nor her fashion! Did you think I would forget. You all know how much I love my om and her style, it’s where I gain inspiration. My mom was a hot stepper at work and even at home! I always remember shopping with my mom at Robinsons May which is now Macy’s and many other department stores. From her hair to her shoes she never missed a beat.

Let’s fast forward, after my parents divorce, my mom moved 3 of her 4 kids to Virginia where I and my sister completed our bachelors degree from Norfolk State University, only following in our brother and other older sister’s footsteps. Our educational train didn’t stop there as we all today have our master’s degree in various fields.

Through many hardships that my mom faced she never gave up on her determination to be a good mother to her children, to motivate to get all of us through college, and to trust in God. One thing she wanted for all of us was to be better than her and to get an education. We all did just that! We owe that strength, long hours of studying and student loan debt to her ūüôā (but that’s good debt I’ll say) Today my mom still hasn’t missed a beat, as she recently retired from being a medical assistant from Sentera Hospital and is planning on traveling and of course spending time with her grandchildren. (not mine yet!)

IMG_1521IMG_4739

I owe so much to this strong, beautiful, godly women, words honestly can’t explain. This is only a snippet into what I can write about my warm peach. I know if you have ever met here she has truly warm your heart and soul. She is truly my twin that I can’t help be more than alike. Today is to you mom, love you

I figured recreating some of my moms steller looks would be an awesome blog for today. I remember looking at these pictures year after year, saying to myself I am going to look like that when I get older, or I can’t wait to dress so nice…(as if she didn’t already dress me well). Tell me your fondest memories of your mom or any special women in your life.

Super Defined Curls Using Flexi Rods

Divas,

So my hair has gone flat and the humidity got to my hair from all of the Hot Atlanta Heat! So I decided to add some curl body and bounce to my hair. Flexi Rods are a great way to add curl and definition to your hair. I will be showing you how to get a super defined curl using flexi rods.

Products & tools

  • Comb
  • Hood Dryer (you can also air dry your hair, its totally up to you!)
  • Lotta Body setting lotion
  • Spray bottle
  • Hair clips
  • Flexi rods
  • Oil of your choice

Tip: Pout 2 parts water and 2 parts Lotta Body into the spray bottle. This dilutes the Lotta Body since its very thick. it allows you hair to dry faster.

Step 1: make sure your hair is detangled make a part in the front of your hair. this is totally up to you.

Step 2: make a part in the back of your hair. Clip the rest of your hair up and away. divide that part into sections.

Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 6.17.29 PM Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 6.16.57 PM

Step 3: Spary the Lotta Body onto one of the sections. Now take your flexi rod and begin wrapping the hair around the rod form the bottom. when you wrap your hair around the rod do a 360 degree turn and twist on the rod. (please view my video for more instructions)

Step 4: Repeat all over your hair. Sit under the hooded dryer or air dry. I ended up sitting under the hooded dryer but then I fell asleep.

Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 6.15.47 PM Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 6.15.36 PM

Step 5: Untwist your hair off the rod. Once all the rods are out of your hair, add oil to your fingers and run all over your hair. The oil helps reduce frizz.

Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 6.15.13 PM Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 6.14.57 PM

Step 6: Divide curls into smaller strands. make sure to separate each curl gently and curl it around your finger.

Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 6.14.42 PM

Step 7: Pick out your roots with a wide tooth comb. Shake and fluff!
