Happy Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is time to celebrate your mom, grandmother, aunts, sisters, friends or anyone that has been in your life that has children. For many this can be a day of remembering our loss loved ones. In my eyes being a mother is not easy.. a mother wears many hats, uptakes many roles and ultimately keeps the daily, yearly and future rolling!

IMG_1523IMG_4746

Today I want to recognize my twin, my rock, my warm peach, my mom. Teresa Lynn (Salone) Shakoor was born on August 12, 1954 in San Diego California, to Robert and Doris Salone. She is the youngest of 3 and loves to sing, dance, care for others and can cook a mean peach and sweet potato pie! After graduating Lincoln High school.. yes where the black panthers marched to protect their fellow brethern! She went on to San Diego City college and received a certificate in administration from Kellsy Jenny College. Not many years after she married William Perry Thornton aka Rashad Shakoor. Yep that’s how I became Tupacs cousin! My mom joined forces with my father by opening Shure-Core cutting company, which was the first black owned construction company in San Diego. Looking back today a lot of the bridges, bypasses and other foundational structures in San Diego where built by my dad and administered by my mom. Pretty cool I’ll say!

The construction company was not the only company in the shakoor family, as I said before my mom can cook a mean meal! Well soon Teresa’s fine foods was born. By this time my mom had for kids me being the youngest.. and her only side kick was our momma Doris ( her mom). She managed to raise 4 kids, be a devoted wife, and run a full time business. Although the food train came to an end it didn’t stop her famous potato salad from becoming world famous.. When I say world famous I mean famous in the African American community. My mom catered her potato salad to the military making sometimes over 60 pounds of potato salad. her potato salad was such a hit that she was personally asked to cater a luncheon for the Shabazz family! Yes the one and only Malcolm X family.

IMG_1517IMG_4743

my mom landed a job with the San Diego Union Tribune where she work, the classified ads, and then managed the obituary column. Being a key role to a huge newspaper didn’t slow down my mom at home nor her fashion! Did you think I would forget. You all know how much I love my om and her style, it’s where I gain inspiration. My mom was a hot stepper at work and even at home! I always remember shopping with my mom at Robinsons May which is now Macy’s and many other department stores. From her hair to her shoes she never missed a beat.

Let’s fast forward, after my parents divorce, my mom moved 3 of her 4 kids to Virginia where I and my sister completed our bachelors degree from Norfolk State University, only following in our brother and other older sister’s footsteps. Our educational train didn’t stop there as we all today have our master’s degree in various fields.

Through many hardships that my mom faced she never gave up on her determination to be a good mother to her children, to motivate to get all of us through college, and to trust in God. One thing she wanted for all of us was to be better than her and to get an education. We all did just that! We owe that strength, long hours of studying and student loan debt to her 🙂 (but that’s good debt I’ll say) Today my mom still hasn’t missed a beat, as she recently retired from being a medical assistant from Sentera Hospital and is planning on traveling and of course spending time with her grandchildren. (not mine yet!)

IMG_1521IMG_4739

I owe so much to this strong, beautiful, godly women, words honestly can’t explain. This is only a snippet into what I can write about my warm peach. I know if you have ever met here she has truly warm your heart and soul. She is truly my twin that I can’t help be more than alike. Today is to you mom, love you

I figured recreating some of my moms steller looks would be an awesome blog for today. I remember looking at these pictures year after year, saying to myself I am going to look like that when I get older, or I can’t wait to dress so nice…(as if she didn’t already dress me well). Tell me your fondest memories of your mom or any special women in your life.

Maxi Dress Tips

IMG_4337IMG_4338IMG_4356IMG_4353

Maxi dresses have evolved into a spring and summer must have for me. Honestly long maxi dresses growing up were not the hottest trend for a teenager let alone for any young girl trying to figure out her fashion sense. Maxi dresses can go grandma real quick.. or even too sexy depending on your body type. Here are a few helpful tips for picking a maxi dress.

  1. Maxi: Equals long in length, but does not mean big in width. Be mindful if you are short like me some maxi dresses will tend to hang on me and make me look even skinnier. Try the high low or the asymmetrical maxi dresses this will give he look as if you are taller instead of shorter. If you are bigger than me do not buy a larger size or try to cover up your shape. this will only make you look larger or like you are wearing grandmas moo-moo! Flaunt what you have gracefully.
  2. Prints: if someone who is a size 0 with a printed maxi dress on the odds of it looking the same on someone who is considered plus size, it will not look the same. Prints play an illusion that you are bigger or smaller. If you are considered plus size try smaller prints and if considered petite try a larger print. let me know how that works?
  3. Shape: Weather you are big or small we all have to create that illusion that we have this banging shape. Even if you have a small waist you tend to accentuate this area. Try purchasing dresses with a waist tie to pull in your waist. this will create that hour glass affect.

Maxi Dresses are a must have and should be a staple for spring and summer. They are easy, light and many wearing often wear them to weddings and date nights. you can always dress them up or down depending on the material and style! Don’t forget maxi dresses can be worn with heels, tennis shoes or sandals.. take your pick.

For this look it’s a simple wrap maxi dress. The wrap helps to pull in my waist and make my bust look bigger. I went with a soft bold print. Because this dress is long i choose to pair it with heels. This give the illusion that i am taller, like I am going to rip the runway. How would you style this dress?

This dress is no long available, but I have you covered click here for several options!

How to Achieve 2 Looks 1 Outfit

Do you remember making fresh lemonade and setting up shop on the corner street? Ok I didn’t! However I remember picking lemons in my granny’s backyard. The only thing abut my granny’s lemons is that they were sweet. How do lemons become sweet? Well the neighboring orange tree crossbreed with the lemon tree making an lemorange or an orangemon. Whichever way you these lemons made the best lemonade. You could eat them raw and not once have to pucker your face.

This outfit giving me summer breeze on grandmas porch drinking that good ole sweet lemonade. This 2 piece outfit is from SteinMart, it is very vesatile as it comes with high waisted pants that are lined. So no peek a boos. The top can be cropped or you can pull it down to meet the pants at your waist. It’s off the shoulder with straps. This shirt is a plus because it’s bra friendly.

The red option is if you are feeling bold. I felt that this already vibrant outfit needed a contrasting color so why not red? I added this red floppy hat that is old from Walmart, my JustFab tie up heels and a red Kenneth Cole tote bag.

IMG_4366IMG_4367IMG_4368

For the white an denim option. Now this was easy and safe. Since denim goes with just about anything, this was a no brainier to pair these basket weaved denim heels with this outfit. Toss on some darling cat eye shades and there you have it.

Turn Up The Heat With Color!

IMG_4232IMG_4230IMG_4238IMG_4231IMG_4236

As the temperature here in Georgia starts to heat up, my clothes and color choices do too.  I have been so eager to break out into bright colors. One of my favorite work looks are slim leg pants and a printed blouse. This style is not foreign to Emanee’s Closet as I love a good skinny pant and blouse however the paper-bag waist pant is so hot and trending right now. These are the tapered high waisted version of the wide leg pants that you have seen on the blog.

I was instantly drawn to the hot pink pants.. well I have only been searching for like 4 years, for the perfect hot pink pant! And… of course I found them at New York and Company. Pairing this cute trousers with a vibrant printed top only adds a touch personality to this look. This blouse has cuffed sleeves and can be worn tucked in our out with slacks like I have or even jeans. I love pieces that you can inter-change to dress them up or down!

Let’s not forget this cute kitten heel bow tie pump. Of course form JustFab! These lovelies come in black and blush pink. They are a faux suede material and are very comfortable. These shoes are a perfect match for the office or even a weekend look with jeans.

How are your welcoming spring into your closet?

“I have learned that as long as I hold fast to my beliefs and values – and follow my own moral compass – then the only expectations I need to live up to are my own.”
– Michelle Obama.

I am holding onto my beliefs in God, morals, values and my goals. It has been a struggle to push myself to do more. Not that I am not doing enough but I have always been someone with multiple projects going or jobs. Now as a married women I am finding that things are changing.. for the good 🙂 I have ideas that I really would like to explore I just need to take that leap and become that true “Girl Boss” I already am!

This outfit is an representation of me right now. Solid green jumpsuit with a matching green tassel necklace. Shows my strength and stability on the outside. The shoes are funky in print which has always been the inner me. I added the black and white to show the contrast of my ideas form being bright to dark of where I need to step into the light and jump into my dreams and ideas!

I would love to sip on a cup of ho tea and snuggle up in the bed with a fuzzy blanket.. However it’s Monday so that means we must conquer the week! Now that Thanksgiving is over it is not Christmas season. I kid you not hours after I ate dinner I put up my tree and decorated! I was not wasting anytime this year! I am probably more excited about this Christmas because it’s me and my husbands first Christmas! I will share a few of the personalized holiday decor items I recently purchased.

I am feeling a bit extra in the holiday season so all my outfits lately have been festive. This outfit I am wearing, everything is from New York & Company except for my favorite JustFab boots. NY & Company came with it this year with the hats and scarfs. I love hats with pom poms and this year the hat is one color and the pom pom is another.. eek I can’t wait to show you all my hat collection! The sweet cream and gold lacing in my sweater is so comfortable and long. I love sweaters that are long and cozy. I added this simple vest to match the beenie. Topped this look off with my super stretch jegging’s and my favorite pair of red laced camel boots! This look has me looking like a mean candy cane.

FYI: NY&CO is having a 75% off Cyber Monday sale. JUSTFAB is also having a Cyber Monday sale and items are starting at $10!!

Teal Cable Knit Sweater

FullSizeRenderFullSizeRender_1FullSizeRender_2FullSizeRender_3FullSizeRender_4

BRRR… who felt that cold breeze this morning?  Sometimes my best motivation is getting up and putting on “feel good” clothes.. That means a sophisticated look! Iv’e been in my chill mode lately and have not been featuring any of my classy looks!

I swear Eva Mendes always gets me right! With her timeless elegant looks, I truly have  weakness for her designs. I am loving the color teal right now, as it’s one of the must have colors for fall and winter 2017! I actually have a similar all burgundy and a all white skirt and top assemble like this teal one. This cable knitted skirt loves to hug…or make you look like you have curves! The skirt is very stretchy and comfortable and honestly it’s the perfect length. I opted for the sleeveless ribbed turtleneck shell and draped with bell sleeve zip up jacket! This look can be worn with booties, pumps or like I did with these opened toed JustFab heels. I love adding prints with solids to give the look for character.  xo Happy Fashion Divas!

Fall 2017 Colors You Must have In Your Wardrobe

Fall is around the corner.. is your wardrobe ready? Fall can often get stereotyped as only wearing dark color.. mixed with orange and olive green.. exactly the colors of a pumpkin. However I love color and wanted to share a few trending colors for this fall. Try stepping out of your comfort zone and add color to your fall wardrobe! I will be sharing a few items in these colors.. look out for those blogs.

pantone fall 2017

Grenadine: This color is more on the orange-y red side. this color goes well with neutrals and is easy to pair for a day to night look!

Tawny Port
: Absolutely a beautiful color.. You may have to do some searching around to find this color, but with pops of navy blue’s and golds this would be a stunning look!

Ballet Slipper: If you love pink you will love this almost blush pink color. I was so happy to see that my color made it on the list.. Pinks can be work with almost any neutral color and you will always be the star of the show.. you can easily dress this color up or down.. take your pick!

Butter Rum: Doesn’t this color sound delicious? Almost a caramel/camel color but so rich and soft at the same time. This color can be an alternative to your basic grey or black.. try it and tell me what you think.

Peony Navy: I like to think of this as the dusty blue.. reminds me of a charcoal color.. the kind you can’t quite tell if it’s black or grey or blue. However navy is always in fashion.. duhhh blue jeans.. I would load up on this color as it’s a bit soft that your ordinary navy blue and still looks very rich for fall and winter

Neutral Grey: How much more neutral can grey get? With a color like this, it’s very easy to mix prints with such a soft color. neutral grey comes in different shades in my opinion, from a hint of sparkly silver to just muted grey.. This is always a great color to have in your wardrobe.

Shaded Spruce: What is this? I have never heard of this.. seems more like a softer teal to me. It’s very hard to find.. but may become more popular this fall and winter.. keep your eyes open!

Golden Lime: Put the lime in the coconut and twist it all up.. oops wrong lime! this green is so unique, that so many of us shy away from bright bold colors like this.. however look for clothing in hues of moss green hardly anyone calls this golden lime.

Marina: Doesn’t this color remind you or the beach..nautical theme? it will be interesting to see the true marina color in clothing as it resembles a pastel blue.. I will enjoy pairing this color with darker blues, prints and yellows.

Autumn Maple: let’s call this color pumpkin spice latte! I absolutely love this color.. However it’s another hard one to find.. I silently pray tot eh fashion Gods that they over load the racks with sweaters, scarves, pants jewelry in this color.. it adds the perfect punch to any outfit!

Have fun with these color! xo happy fashion Divas
